The Benefits of Neem Oil

April 2, 2013 12:00 am

With the mild winter we had and the warm damp spring we are experiencing, our gardens are sure to have some fungal and mildew issues this year. Preventive spray with neem oil is a safe and effective way to insure our plants look their best.

Neem oil is a vegetable oil pressed from the seeds of the neem tree which is found all around India and has been introduced to tropical regions all around the world. The oil is widely used in cosmetics and medicines and is very useful in the garden.

Neem oil is a natural fungicide that with regular use will prevent and control powdery mildew, black spot, downy mildew, anthracnose, rust, leaf spot, botrytis, needle rust, scab and flower, twig and tip blight.

Although neem oil is marketed as an insecticide, it only kills insects by smothering them just like other horticultural spray oils so the insects will have to be sprayed directly. However, neem oil is a powerful insect repellent. It is very effective in keeping away all destructive flying and crawling insects such as aphids and mites.

The best thing about neem oil is that it’s a safe, all natural, renewable product. Neem oil is safe for pets, children, beneficial insects, pollinating insects and the environment. Just don’t spray the beneficial insects directly. It can also be used up to the day of harvest on your edible plants. Just wash your fruits and vegetables before eating, neem oil has a nasty taste.

Neem oil can be found at Drake’s 7 Dees Garden centers.  If you have more questions our friendly staff will be happy to help you out!
